Mexico Beach, FL
Residing upon Highway 98, Mexico Beach is a quaint coastal town right on the Gulf of Mexico. When you talk of this community and its history, you really have to talk about in two different ways. In its early days, Mexico Beach was a place full of bungalows and vacation homes where tourists would come from all over the country to partake in the majesty that is the white sandy beaches and picturesque waters of the Gulf. This led to the town being incorporated in 1966, where it continued to thrive and grow. That is until one fateful day, October 10th, 2018.
It was on this day that Hurricane Michael made landfall very close to the city. This category five maelstrom brought 160mph winds, extreme rain and flooding, and the loss of power and running water for an extended period of time. The entire town was devastated, as it was considered Ground Zero for one of the most ferocious hurricanes in history. For a lot of communities, this would mean the end.
For Mexico Beach, it meant a time for renewal. The residents of this area, the good people of Florida, and many others nationwide banded together to help rebuild the lives of those who called Mexico Beach home. Though it has not been fully restored, the #RebuildingWithLove campaign continues, as the resolve of the citizens that call Mexico Beach home remains ever strong and unyielding.
