Located on a cluster of islands in the Gulf of Mexico just off the coast of Levy County, Cedar Key has one of the most rich and decorated histories of any city in the entirety of Florida. The name of the town comes from the Red Cedar trees that used to inhabit the area, though they are quite scarce now. There is evidence of humans residing in the area as far back as 500 BC at Shell Mound, though the first real map of the area date to around 1542 when it was known as Las Islas Sabines. The area was inhabited by the Native American group known as the Seminoles and was heavily sought after and fought over through out the years. During the American Civil War, Cedar Key would be an important port, and source for imported goods. As such, it was also heavily protected.
As the years went on, the community tried to put a greater emphasis on retaining its wildlife, becoming extremely environmentally conscious. Now, the community is known for its fishing and seafood. It is also home to some yearly festivals including the Old Florida Celebration of the Arts and the October Seafood Festival. Both of these events draw visitors from all over the country. This area has been able to keep its small town charm over the years, with no high rise buildings in sight. Instead, you will find quaint cottages and charming vacation homes as its residents enjoy their tight knit community.
