Located right along the coast, Tarpon Springs was named after the tarpon fish off the coast jumping out of the water. Now while it is debated on whether it was tarpon or mullet that was jumping, what is not debatable is the beautiful beaches and charming community that the residents have built there. The history of the city is vast, and mostly centers around the sponge industry. While this might seem unique, people would come from all over the world, particularly from Greece, to take part in sponge diving. It became so prevalent that it would eventually become a million dollar industry in Florida, in large part thanks to Tarpon Springs. In 1947, an unfortunate bout of red tide would completely destroy the sponge industry, the residents would take up other industries including shrimping. Eventually sponge diving returned, but the town does not rely on it as it once did.
In addition to sponge diving, Tarpon Springs is also well known for its Greek culture. There are a higher percentage of Greek Americans here than any other place in the United States. This demographic is reflected in the businesses, events, and overall culture of the city. Tourists come from all over to enjoy Greek cuisine and culture, and to dolphin watch from some of the most breathtaking beaches you can find.
