Known for its beauty and fun interactive activities, Inverness is located at the crossroads of Highway 41 and Highway 44. Founded in 1868, the city was originally named Tompkinsville after its community founder A.D. Tompkins. A short time later, the rights of the town was sold, and the name was changed to match the most northern city in the United Kingdom. It would take another 50 years for the city to incorporate, finally doing so in 1919. Over the years the city has been recognized as being an official Tree City by the National Arbor Day Foundation.
Though there are many things to do and see in and around Inverness, few get the local residents as excited as the Great American Cooter Festival, held every year at the end of October. This amazing celebration is named after the Cooter turtle, and is a family friendly event with music, games, and arts and crafts in both of the city’s major parks. Shortly after the Cooter Festival is the Festival of the Arts, celebrating the works of over 100 local artists from the area. Inverness is a booming community with several locally owned business that the town supports quite well.
