On September 2nd, 2022, we will observe Labor Day.
Typically, many think of Labor Day as the holiday that signifies kids are officially back in school learning new things, and the summer season is coming to an end. In Florida’s case, summer may be permanent but we will see an occasional cold spell sometime in October, November, or December.
Labor Day, with its many interpretations, is the annual celebration of workers and their achievements. It all started during the time of the industrial revolution. Let’s take a quick look at the history!
A long time ago, adults and even some children in the workforce would work 7 days a week, 12 hours a day in order to provide the best life for themselves and their families. It was tough, but this was when factory work was at an all-time high.
Some children as young as 5 or 6 even worked in mills or factories, only earning a fraction of what adults during this time received. Most of these workers experienced unsafe work conditions that were often unsanitary. Around this time, labor unions became more prominent and would hold rallies to protest the poor conditions and pay. Some of these rallies turned extremely violent. With many instances of unethical behavior from business owners towards workers; and lack of proper law and order, there had to be a change in order to progress and make conditions better.
On September 5th, 1882, over 10,000 workers marched from City Hall in New York City to Union Square, signifying the first Labor Day parade. The “working man’s holiday” is celebrated on the first Monday of September. It was started in New York City and Chicago, and then quickly spread nationwide.
Most state governments recognized the holiday, but it wasn’t until about 1894 that the federal government recognized it as a nationwide federal holiday.
