A town that is as unique as its name, Apalachicola is a charming coastal town that is surrounded on three sides by that Apalachicola Bay and Apalachicola River. As you can imagine with all the water around, Apalachicola is a nautical community owing a lot of its commerce to fishing and shrimping. Though it was founded in 1827, and receiving its name in 1831, the history of the area stretches far beyond that.
The town was named after the tribe of Native Americans called the Apalachicola, a subset of the Seminole. The name translates into “People on the Other Side,” likely referring to the people on the other side of the river. Starting in 1513, the area was under Spanish control, where it would remain until 1763. The town would continue to thrive as a port city for many years and would even be home to Dr. John Gorrie who in an effort to help lower the body temperature of fever patients, designed patents that would go on to revolutionize the refrigeration and air conditioning industries.
Today, Apalachicola retains all of its charm and still embracing its roots in fishing and shrimping. There are many locally owned businesses in the community, including some of the best seafood you will find in Northwest Florida.
