AUTO
After an accident or theft recovery, if the insurance company deems your car as “totaled,” it means that the estimate of repairs approach or exceeds the car’s value.
If you were not at fault in an accident, you can make a third-party claim to the “at-fault” driver’s insurance company. You should also secure a repair estimate from the facility you wish to perform repairs on your vehicle. Their insurance company will typically issue the check directly to you and it is your responsibility to pay for your repairs.
If the other driver does not have insurance, your uninsured motorist coverage will respond for medical expenses beyond your Personal Injury Protection (PIP) limits. For physical damage to your vehicle, your Collision Coverage less your chosen deductible will respond.
If your car is stolen you’ll want to file a police report immediately to initiate the process of possible recovery. Most insurance companies have a waiting period in place to see if the car is recoverable. If the vehicle isn’t found within the waiting period, the insurance company will initiate a settlement. You will want to take a complete inventory of everything in and on your vehicle at the time it was stolen.

HOME/RENTER/DWELLING
We cannot generally answer this question as there are various types of policies and policy types with different insured perils, coverage options, conditions, and exclusions. It is important you understand exactly how your policy responds so you can be assured of protection from exposures most important to you. This is why it is crucial you discuss and review your policies annually with a licensed insurance professional.
Most homeowner policies cover two important areas: Property and Liability. Property covers your structures and possessions.
Liability means your responsibility for expenses you’re legally obligated to pay, for actions caused by you, your family, or as a condition of your property.
Important common examples of perils that are NOT covered in your homeowner policy include flood and earthquake damage.
Renters insurance is typically available for as little as $150 a year and protects you, your possessions, and just as important or more so, your personal liability.
Even as the tenant of a property, you can and will be held responsible for damages caused to a structure you do not own if you are deemed responsible for the damage.
Generally, no. The property owner’s insurance covers the structure itself and seldom a tenant’s possessions or liability. In most cases, the landlord’s insurance company is obligated to pursue claims against you if it’s determined you are legally responsible for damage caused to the landlord’s structure. You should clarify this with your landlord before entering into a lease agreement.
A wind mitigation is an inspection conducted by a licensed professional that examines the following elements of your home: roof covering, roof decking attachment, roof to wall attachment, roof geometry, wall construction, secondary water barriers, and opening protection. Wind mitigations are not required for insurance but significant discounts (25-75%) can be applied when the reports and pictures are supplied to the insurance company for consideration.
A four point inspection looks at the four major systems (roof, electrical, plumbing, HVAC) in an older home and is typically conducted at the time of purchase. Four point inspections are also conducted by a licensed professional or building contractor. Most insurance companies require a four point inspection when a home is older than 40 years or a rental property is older than 30 years.
BUSINESS
Absolutely. Your chance of suffering or causing a loss begins on your first day of business. Many states require businesses to have insurance to begin operating. Premiums also tend to be higher if you conduct business before obtaining proper coverage.
Yes. Home-based businesses are often neglected when it comes to coverage but they deserve attention just as much as brick-and-mortar businesses. Regardless of where your business resides, you’ll want to protect your investment and we can help!
It’s wise to invest in this type of coverage for unforeseen circumstances that cause you to halt business temporarily. Business Interruption Insurance covers the profits you would have earned, based on your financial records, had the disaster not occurred. The policy also covers continuing operating expenses that continue even though business has halted.
