2021 is officially underway! As schools are now gearing up for more students to continue in-person instruction, many teens will be back on the road. January is Teen Driving Awareness Month and we have come up with tips to ensure your young drivers are safe and secure.
Safety is everyone’s top priority!
Make sure your son or daughter understands the risks involved with driving a vehicle. Always remember that this is a serious conversation. Please encourage them to always wear a seatbelt, never use a cell phone to text while driving, and if they take phone calls, to keep the phone mounted in the car where it does not obstruct any basic driving functions.
Create a parent-teen driving agreement.
Sometimes it is better to establish certain boundaries and rules to insure everyone is always safe inside the vehicle. Some parents set specific times for their teens to drive and restrict the number of passengers in the vehicle. Having a curfew which will have your teen home before dark reduces the risk of any accidents at night, where many people cannot see as clearly. Having less passengers also reduces the amount of liability for the parents of the teen driver and the parents of the passengers.
Choose a highly rated, safe vehicle!
Everyone loves a fast, high powered vehicle but those can be considered unsafe for new drivers. Teen drivers in high performance vehicles also have higher insurance premiums. If your teen wants to purchase a car, look at safe options that will provide ease of mind in case anything happens. We always hope that nothing ever will, but sometimes in life, the unexpected happens. A highly rated, and safe vehicle is great for not only for your kids, but for your peace of mind as well.
Review your insurance policy.
When it comes to insurance, anyone who is driving your vehicle should be listed on your policy. If your teenage son or daughter recently got their license or is going to drive your vehicle before they get their own, please make revisions necessary to ensure proper coverage.
