Punta Gorda, FL
Located on the shores of the Peace River, Punta Gorda was named after the area that the Spanish coined as Fat Point. This charming community has a history that dates back into the 1850s, due to its locality close to the Charlotte Harbor. The growth of the community really came when the Florida Southern Railroad made Punta Gorda its most Southern stop. This allowed industry to thrive, as more people flocked to the city to take advantage of its growth and desirable location. One thing that is shown throughout the city’s history, is humanity working together regardless of race. The first postmaster of the town was Robert Meacham, an African American. One of the city’s most famous residents was Joseph Blanchard, an African American sea captain whose bungalow became the site of The Blanchard House Museum.
In modern times, Punta Gorda experienced severe damage from Hurricane Charley in 2004. However, the city took it as an opportunity to revitalize their city, adding a Harborwalk, city parks, neighborhoods, restaurants, and retail stores. The resolve of the people of Punta Gorda is unmatched, and it is a testament to their willpower that the town is as prosperous as it is today.
